For work last month I did a study of Emily Carr with the group of kids that I have. I had never painted something so quickly before (about 1/2 hour) and I was pretty ecstatic about the result. I just used dollar-store paints and some crappy brush that I found. I was so excited about finishing a piece so quickly that I did another one later that took about 3 hours. Thank you Emily Carr for your beautiful work that I can learn from.

This is a collaboration that I worked on with a group of kids at my after-school care, and then at We Have So Much To Give last summer. It's messy fun, and beautiful, and you lose your sense of orientation in it.

A pretty simple collage on my bathroom wall as part of last summer's show, featuring some of my favorite musicians, a cut up postcard, testimonies, proclaimation of Jesus, Krink ink, and of course, art's favorite conceptual friend, blood.

These are a few presents I wrapped for Christmas. I was pretty excited about them! The creasing on the red package just sort of happened. I was excited that all the stuff I used (ribbon, twine, wrapping paper) was just re-used from old gifts, barely had to spend anything.

Okay guys, some news! I have my painting "Sheridan Lake No.2" (prints are available) hanging in the Upstart Crow http://www.theupstartcrow.ca/ (which is awesome for Christmas gifts by the way) in Ladner as well as Christmas/greeting cards for sale, and have been chosen to be the artist of the month in May! Awesome. So excited to set up that display.

here's a really old collage I did on a bible cover. probably 2001.

Here's a collage for another bible cover that I just finished up in June. It was inspired by the phrase "It's All New Now", spoken by Paul Hughes in one of his sermons, summing up life with Jesus. No more old life....it's all new now.

Bottom of a longboard for Celeb. the black shapes are the island of New Zealand and the text is 1st Thessalonians 5.

i have finished a number of things lately and i have pictures to prove it. first is a landscape from Sheridan Lake. i started it in july and only now finally had the time to finish it up. i am quite happy with it! i forced myself to loosen up and frankly not really care about the details, and I think that it turned out better than a lot of other landscapes where I worried about the details.

another thing is just a little drawing i did on my bible, a tattoo inspired scroll that says "VEILED IN MYSTERY", since the bible is so perfect yet the truth it presents is so far beyond our understanding that often we must just accept the mystery of it all.

also i have just finished this big abstract piece about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. it is a collaboration between me, Kylie Kornelson, Catherine Bennington, Alia Pidgeon and Laura Klassen. i feel so priviledged to have worked with all these artists and learned a lot and feel like I gained a lot out of the experience. we worked on it over 6 sundays at The Way church in richmond and I worked on it at home as well. The scripture that the art is based on is galations 5 and first corinthians 12. stare and enjoy!

hmm also i have a great idea for business cards that involves splatter, intricate stenciling and maybe the outline of a coffin. haha. will post more soon. thanks for reading!

good news! i am not dead. i am so, so alive! so alive in fact that i have forgotten to blog in a long time. art has been legit lately. what have i done....i have done an abstract based on underoath's song "desperate times, desperate measures", and i have started a new one from the song "the created void". it's looking good so far. i think it will shine. also a few new skimboards have been put out, like a newborn baby.

hmm what else....new shirts for hanzane should be ready for tradesies in a short while, hopefully end of september. yeah, summer is basically over but what can you do, you gotta work with people's schedules. okay.

In other news, the Great I AM is like a Roaring Lion, he is out of control....he is the Radiant One. Praise be to God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

hey-ooooo...... welll....i've been churning out the art lately, mostly it has been for hanzane shirts and other stuff that I cant yet put up cause they're a secret. buttt here's two things i've finished recently. first is the mural for Onelove skateshop in ladner. nice eh? it took me a while to create the idea, but the execution went pretty quickly. except that it was soooo, sooooo cold when i was painting it that i stretched it out over like a week.

anyways, second is a little stencil that i made for jenna mac and her little urban promise dance crew! it'll be sprayed onto their sweatpants or shirts or something.

hello everybody. well, pretty much most of my roofing season is over and so art is getting more time. i recently finished another skimboard which is another variation on the "Catherine" design. i should put up a picture of that. also, i have been working on t shirt designs for Hanzane skimboards, i hope to have some pictures of that up soon. hmm also i am working on a small book which illustrates some of the art i have done over the years.

well well well. here's the board for the amazing catherine. i tried to reflect her personality in the design....dynamic fun colorful. hope you like it catherine!

i did not enter the niebhur's house while they were away on holidays to take a picture of this board. and i did not take anything from the fridge.

this is the start of the board for devon...the black starburst will go on, and then a bit more splatter and mess on top. enjoy!

i have finished my top secret painting. i'll put up a picture when i'm allowed to. and that is good news. i'm pleased with how it looks. it was a lot of work but i like it.

the airplane picture for my dad has taken a turn for the worse....well maybe not worse, but longer. i realized that my dimension for the panel was COMPLETELY off. i dont know why. but that is why it was so hard to get the plane's dimensions accurate. so i'm basically starting again and drawing the right dimensions over top. i'll put a picture up when i have something to show for it.

another day, another creation. this one is also a redo of an old one. in the old one, the blue paint was really crappy and i didnt like it but i didnt want to buy any more. so i finally did and here we go. i also made the alternating pattern upside down so that i could fit more onto the image. anyways. i like it. much better than that monstrosity that i completed yesterday. hope you are all having a good day. thanks for reading!

so, i've been spending a lot of time on my top secret painting. it's comign along quite nicely. i should probably have it done in a week or maybe less. i've been trying to work on the catherine stencil with the color stripes but i really cant figure out what colors to put on, because the ones i have on there right now i do NOT like. hmm i will put up a picture and then hope for some suggestions.

also, i have two old sara stencil pieces which i will redo, the same ideas as before but more work put into them. they wont take long to do so i will have some pictures up soon.

ummm....i have been quite busy with roofing and i have gotten almost no art done lately. it is disturbing. however, i have a plan for some small things involving some demos for AGAIN art teeees, and an update on the new catherine stencil. also i am starting a commissioned painting for the niebuhrs of a scene from their cabin in osoyoos. i think it will be beautiful. okay. will try to post some pics soon!

there is nothing average about this beautiful banner, nor is there anything average about hanzane. which is why it is so awesome. well i added an outline around the text to make it more readable and it looks better. also below is a picture of another paradise island board that i'm making for dylan symonds. and it's done, it just needs a coat of sealer.

in other news, i am working on a painting for my dad, of his airplane in some desert somewhere.

also, i am creating another work which involves the "catherine" stencil, but will have beautiful handpainted stripes going vertically across the panel. it will be awesome.

I just wanted to put a couple of pictures up for you to check out. this one is a stage in the "paradise island" board for hanzane. i'm painting on those nice pink clouds. pretty sweet.

here's a picture of the "dogwood" board for hanzane. I just worked on it at home. it took quite a while. the cool thing about all these custom boards is that they all have small variations, every one is a little bit different. this dogwood one is one of my favorites.

oh, i also want to mention that i have some art hanging up in a place other than my house and my parent's house. ha.

"Sheridan Sunset" (2007) is on display in the Town Center Mall in Tsawassen, unit #105.

"Recognition: Liana" (2008) and "Recognition: Jesse" (2008) are both on display in the Wired Monk in Cloverdale, 168th and 60th.

also, "Love", the design i did for the 2009 Peace Youth t-shirts, will be seen on people around you very very soon!

hello! this is just an exciting little blog to say how excited i am that the blog is now working on chrissiemens.com!! so cool. well my head is bursting with ideas and hopefully soon i will complete them all.

today i finished the collage for my friend and mailed it to cold michigan (below "Kill All Artists"). isnt michigan where they have like brutal 8 month winters? thats what i remember from reading little house on the prairie. anyhow...back to work...well sort of. actually i'm going to watch tv. but whatever. i hope to post some awesome stuff soon!

hello friends.

well it is a rainy rainy day today. sick. i want some sunshine.

yesterday i worked on creating a banner for a hanzane rail and it's just about finished. just a few more coats of red for the grafitti stencil and it'll be done. then maybe some finishing touches like an outline or black splatter. whatever the boss wants. thats you nick.

i shoudl put some pictures of that up. i'll take some later.

also calla's (pronounced Kay-la, or kolla, it's up to you) collage unfortunately seems to be takign on a life of it's own and is ballooning into massive proportions. you better like it calla.

maybe i'll do an update later of my art life. if i do anything really amazing.

well hello there

its a groggy monday morning. well lots of art is on the schedule for today....

i've been working on a collage for my friend calla. i glued most of it down today and i'm just cutting out pieces for a border. i would put up pictures but she is such a creep that she would spoil it for herself. ha. it will be in the mail soon calla! oh did we talk about prices yet?

later on the skedule for today is some small paintings of herbs and spices and things for a top secret company who i cannot share information about. lets just say that the project will be highly lucrative and....fully legal.

also i'm hoping to work on some stuff for hanzane, a banner for one of their rails....to liven up the scene on the beach and stuff. and maybe attract some customers.

okay green globe...this is my first blog post. so now i can share my feelings online, because nobody does it in real life anymore! yay!

ANYWAYS....so it sunday. i went skimboarding with the hanzane crew today and it was pretty fun but really windy and cold.

i FINALLY finished the design called "dogwood" which features the vines of the dogwood flower all over the board. the back features just a small leaf and a green hanzane guy. every stroke is handpainted, this board has taken the longest of them all. but it was fun and i like the design. keep giving me ideas because i love making custom designs!
